Broncos Scouting Report: DB Justin Simmons

The Broncos have selected Boston College DB Justin Simmons with the 98th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.  Let’s take closer look at Simmons and how he fits on the Broncos roster.

After the trade up to select Memphis QB Paxton Lynch, the Broncos were left with only one pick in the 3rd Round (98th overall).  With that selection, they took Boston College DB Justin Simmons. Let’s take a closer look at the newest member of the “No Fly Zone”.

SCOUTING REPORT:

PROS

Good size (6’2, 202 lbs)

Versatile player. Played every position in secondary

Well rounded skill set with good ball and tackling skills

Put up good numbers at the Combine

Was able to come up with big plays against great competition (Notre Dame, Clemson)

Also showed up well at the Shrine Game.

Will be a great Special Teams player, as he is able to be a gunner and return kicks/punts, if needed

CONS

Doesn’t have a strong frame

Projects better as a Free Safety than Strong Safety or Corner

HOW HE FITS:

I thought this was a well rounded, good pick that will pay dividends now and into the future.  With Ward and Stewart locked in as the starters at Safety in 2016, Simmons will primarily be a Special Teams and sub-package player his rookie year.  With Stewart heading into a contract year and Ward having a raucous style of play, there’s a good chance that Simmons will get a heavy amount of snaps(and starts) sooner than later. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t become a starter(and a good one, at that) by the time his rookie contract is up in the Mile High City.

He’s a great value pick at the end of the 3rd round. He’s got a good overall skill set and has the versatility to make a big impact on Defense and Special Teams immediately.  Look for him to be the #3 Safety in 2016 and eventual starter in the backfield soon after that. I really like this pick and I look forward to seeing his development.
