Does Demaryius Thomas Skipping Duke Matter?

facebooktwitterreddit

Demaryius Thomas is not joining Peyton Manning and other Denver Broncos at Duke University for offseason workouts. That line alone gives Broncos Country pause, but should it? Should anyone be concerned that Thomas has made the choice to stay away from his quarterback’s offseason workouts?

  • Thomas was given the franchise tag by John Elway, and like most NFL players, DT has made the decision to stay away from the Broncos this offseason. Reports are that he is going to skip OTA’s, as well. It feels like a hold out, without the hold out. DT does not plan on missing any playing time this season, and he will likely make it to training camp this summer. So, what is the point?

Thomas has to think about his future, and while he will be making almost $13 million in 2015, the window for players in the NFL is short. Get your money now, or risk losing it all. While Denver and Thomas attempt to work out a long term deal, it makes sense that he stay away. He is working out, and healing, so there is no rush for him to join his teammates at Duke.

However, there is an argument to be made for DT needing the time with Peyton Manning this offseason. While Thomas finished the season with elite numbers in 2014, the start of the season was drop-filled, and had some in Broncos Country asking, “What is wrong with DT?” Could the extra time together help them with timing? Would training with his teammates be better for team chemistry?

The answer to those questions is irrelevant, but it is something think about. Elway and the Broncos are planning on making Thomas one of the highest payed wideouts in the league. Both parties are making a business decision. Thomas has to protect his interests, and obviously so do the Broncos.

The purity of the game is often muddied by contracts, agents, and hold outs. Thomas does not seem to be headed for a hold out. The Broncos will likely give him a huge contract. What is the impact of Thomas avoiding Duke and OTA’s? Probably nothing, but it doesn’t feel good.
