Broncos NFL Draft Rumors: FS Cody Prewitt Has Spoken to Team

This offseason, the Denver Broncos are certainly going to be in the market for safety help, and according to Andrew Mason of DenverBroncos.com, they are covering all bases.

For Prewitt, the fit is perfect. The Broncos are moving to an aggressive, attacking style defense and that is exactly the kind of game he plays. When I watched his game tape, this is a guy who can absolutely fly in a straight line and who makes great plays on the football.

A bigger safety at 225 pounds, Prewitt is a little tight in his hips at times, but in Denver he would have time to grow and learn from another guy who had some similar traits coming out in former Oregon Ducks star T.J. Ward, now a Pro Bowl safety with the Broncos.

Prewitt is a guy that I had pegged as a Broncos target in one of my recent seven round team mock drafts, and I still hold to that. Depending on what the team does in free agency, safety will be a spot that needs to be addressed in the draft, without question. This is a player who played at an All-American level for the Ole Miss defense, which this past year was one of the better units in the country.

He is fearless, hits like a ton of bricks, and takes good angles on the football. Some scouts feel like he will be limited to an in-the-box role as an NFL player, and perhaps if the Broncos could wait it out and get him as a third round pick, it would be the best possible value.

I think especially starting out on special teams, this kid can be a playmaker but his technique in coverage needs work. He has been opportunistic in his four years of starting at Ole Miss, but there is a lot to like about him athletically and from a football standpoint.

There will be a ton of reports about players the Broncos are meeting with at the Combine, but the guys they bring to Denver or visit at their respective schools will speak volumes to the team’s interest. We’ll see what the team thinks of this guy as we progress through the process.
