Broncos Depth Chart Analysis: Quinton Carter Listed As Backup Free Safety

The Denver Broncos released their first depth chart of the season yesterday, because they had to. The NFL mandates it, otherwise, they wouldn’t bother with it until the week before the beginning of the regular season.

Among one of the more noteworthy mentions is Quinton Carter. Carter is listed as the #2 free safety, behind Rahim Moore. In all reality, he’s the #3 safety, period.

In nickel and dime sub-packages, the Broncos have been plugging Carter in at strong safety, and moving T.J. Ward down into the box as a nickel LB.

This news makes me happy. “The Predator”, as I call him, had a standout rookie campaign in 2011, before a knee injury kept him on I.R. the last two seasons.

Carter is a phenomenal athlete and ferocious hitter. Inserting him next to Moore and Ward will provide 3 powerful hitters and will certainly bring that ”enforcer” attitude to the back end of the defense, which was an area many felt was lacking in 2013.

If you’re wondering why I included Moore into the “ferocious” category, just ask Donald Jones.

Duke Ihenacho has that attitude, but he seems to lack the athleticism to cover down the field. Carter is a much more polished player in coverage and will not hesitate to lay the wood.

I’m looking forward to seeing how Jack Del Rio deploys him in the defense. After all he’s been through, I couldn’t be happier for the guy. Are you excited about the return of Quinton “the Predator” Carter?
