Denver Broncos Injury News: DE John Youboty Placed on Waived/Injured List

The Denver Broncos have placed defensive end John Youboty on the waived/injured list. Youboty was reportedly hurt at the Broncos’ rookie mini-camp over the weekend where he suffered a serious Achilles injury.

Youboty was an undrafted free agent out of Temple in 2013, and spent the entire offseason and regular/postseason on the Broncos’ practice squad.

With some of the additions made to Denver’s defensive line, Youboty was likely competing for either the last DE spot on the 53-man roster or one of the eight practice squad spots. This injury, while a major setback, will allow Youboty another season in the Broncos’ system and a chance to compete again for a roster spot in 2015.

If Youboty lands on the Broncos’ injured reserve list, it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. You hate to see players go down, but this injury will allow him potentially to train with the team for another entire season, and could earn him a shot at some playing time next year.

I thought that John Yobouty was a strong candidate for a last roster spot in this team, and his pass rush skills were a key reason for my thinking. However, with him going down due to injury, even if Barrett fails to beat out McCray for backup Sam LB spot, then he may still win a roster spot as a pass rush DE with a strong camp showing. “Q” Smith should be able to lock down a roster spot, if he’s finally healthy and we should see some glimpses of his potential during camp/pre-season. One of the key “secret” strengths of this team is last roster spot pass rushers, which could prove to be critical in case of any injuries to starters. Another guy that I think could prove to be a stud, and may even win a starting DE job, if Wolfe is slower to recover than expected is Malik Jackson. His flexibility to move inside in the nickel to provide extra rush ability is also huge for this team. Who is your break out star candidate on this team?
