Expect the NFL to really crack down on Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell.
Russell was arrested and jailed on July 6 for driving while under the influence and being involved in two car accidents, one of which he ran into a police car.
At a time when the NFL is trying to enhance its image after reportedly 40 arrests since January, the league will likely not give Russell any slack on this one. Back in 2010, Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand was charged for driving while impaired and had a blood-alcohol content of .21. For that, he was fined $100,000 by the NFL and suspended for 30 days.
While Russell doesn’t own the Broncos, he will likely get a heftier punishment, and rightfully so. Russell will eventually sit down in front of Roger Goodell just like players have to.
The Broncos were obviously very disappointed in Russell as evident in their statement.
If the front office expects their players and staff to stay out of trouble, they have to do the same.
