It doesn’t matter how many times Broncos’ linebacker Joe Mays apologizes to Texans quarterback Matt Schaub. That brutal hit that left Schaub without a helmet and without a chunk of his ear will cost Mays a game.
The NFL announced Tuesday that Mays will be suspended for one game and fined $50,000. He was fined $7,875 after the week two game for a roughing the passer call on Matt Ryan. Apparently, the league thought that a fine alone was not enough to keep Mays from doing it again.
“I play fast,” Mays said later. “I don’t want people to think I’m a dirty player or a headhunter or anything like that. I just play fast.” – Joe Mays to the Denver Post
John Fox didn’t think the hard hit was intentional. Mays will appear the suspension.
Through three games, Mays has 10 tackles. He had 75 tackles and 2 pass deflections last season.
