Former Broncos Defensive Coordinator Hired By Ravens

Jack Del Rio isn’t the only defensive coordinator grabbing headlines. Former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale was hired as the new inside linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens. Martindale was the Broncos defensive coordinator in 2010, but was let go after the team ranked last in points allowed (29.4 per game) and 31st in rush defense (154.6 yards per game).

Wink taught me a lot about how to play linebacker and it showed with the year I had (in 2009, leading the NFL with 17 sacks). He’s a smart coach, a down-to-earth guy, great players coach. The Ravens just hired a great coach. He’s going to be a D-coordinator again someday. – Elvis Dumervil to the Denver Post

Martindale was released after the ’10 season to make room for Dennis Allen, the team’s sixth defensive coordinator in six years. Prior to joining the Broncos, Martindale coached in Oakland and was actually a head coaching candidate for the Raiders.
