Broncos Don’t Allow Raiders To Interview Smith

First the Oakland Raiders hired Dennis Allen, and now they’re trying to poach Broncos linebacker coach Richard Smith.

The Broncos denied the Raiders interview request which would have allowed Smith to interview for the team’s defensive coordinator position. Obviously Allen is very familiar with Smith and he saw how the linebacker coach developed rookie Von Miller.

Smith was one of the top three candidates for Denver’s defensive coordinator position before the team hired Jack Del Rio. The Broncos didn’t want to separate Del Rio and Smith this year.

The Broncos coaching staff is on vacation this week, but Del Rio is at Dove Valley beginning his first week of work. He already had an extended vacation when the Jaguars let him go last November. Del Rio is developing Denver’s defense while everyone gets some R&R.

"For me right now, I’m excited to be here. I’m fired up. I’m not looking anywhere other than the next week, the next month and how we can dig in and do a great job here, and that’s what I’m all about. I’m 100 percent in as a member of this organization,” Del Rio said. “I’m going to be a good worker bee on this staff for John Fox, and all the people here. I’m going to give them 100 percent of what I have, and try to help this organization win. – Jack Del Rio to the Denver Post"

Del Rio is the Broncos seventh defensive coordinator in seven years.
