Brian Dawkins Gets Broncos Off The Ground

The Broncos are back near, not at, Dove Valley.

For the second time this week, players gathered for an organized workout led by Steadman Hawkins sports performance expert Loren Landow.

Fourteen players were a part of this group including Kyle Orton who threw to Eric Decker and Dan Gronkowski prior to the start of the regular workout. LenDale White, Lance Ball, and Ben Garland were the new players to join today’s session.

The team will hold two more player-organized team workouts next week. The player who organized this? None other than veteran safety Brian Dawkins.

Of the two teams that B-Dawk has played for, there isn’t a fan that doesn’t like him. Dawkins spent 13 years with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he’s entering his third year with the Broncos.

Turning 38 years old in October, Dawkins is the true leader of this team. Last season, the Broncos captains were Dawkins, Kyle Orton, Champ BaileyDaniel Graham, D.J. Williams, Chris Kuper, and Wesley Woodyard. Orton may not even be the Broncos starting QB when week one rolls around, Graham was released, Williams had his captaincy stripped after a DUI arrest, and Woodyard is a free agent.

That leaves Dawkins and Bailey as the two guys that teammates really look up to.

Other leaders from high caliber teams around the league have been organizing workouts for their teammates. Drew Brees is doing it in New Orleans, Eli Manning is doing it in New York, Philip Rivers is doing it in San Diego, Tony Romo is doing it in Dallas, and Mark Sanchez has organized “Jets West” camp in California.

All of those teams are playoff contenders. One would think that they can kick their feet up a little this off season, but that’s just it – they’re playoff contenders because they don’t.

As fans, we should praise Brian Dawkins for getting the ball rolling. No one else seems to take charge the way he does. If players are in town, they should be attending these workouts instead of working out on their own. Team camaraderie starts early in the year, and like the flowers blooming this spring, a player’s talent can bloom through these workouts.
