Bob Howsam laid the foundation for the house that John Elway built. He also played a pivotal roll in making Denver one of the greatest sports cities in the country by building a future for the Colorado Rockies.
According to the Rocky Mountain News, Howsam “oversaw his family’s Denver Bears baseball team of the Western League and American Association from 1947 to 1962 and built the ballpark that eventually became Mile High Stadium. He then gave the site its most famous tenant by helping found the Broncos as one of the charter franchises in the American Football League in 1960.”
Not many people in Colorado knew him, but his presence is felt every time we watch the Broncos and Rockies play in this city. According to Robert Howsam, his father had many opportunities to sell the Broncos to other cities for large amounts of money, but he didn’t want the team to leave Denver.
As Broncos fans, we say thank you Bob Howsam!
